NAKMAS INSURANCE – OVERSEAS CLARIFICATION
NAKMAS has had several requests to clarify the personal accident insurance for affiliates attending overseas events.
The following is an extract received today (21 October 2009) from the NAKMAS insurers, Zurich:
“I can confirm that having clarified the position with Zurich with regard to NAKMAS Recognised Events, the PA Insurance arranged through the Scheme will extend to cover Students/Members whilst participating in any recognised event taking place overseas.
Please note however, that the “overseas extension” applies in respect of the Core covers only, and that the Additional Covers which we incorporated within the Scheme i.e. Dental Expenses & Hospitalisation, will not apply where the Dental Treatment or Hospitalisation takes place outside of the UK.
The reason for this is that these covers only apply in respect of amounts which are not covered by the National Health Service, and hence, where the Claimant is overseas, and in particular, a country that does not have a National Health Service, the exposure for the Insurers is considered to be too great.
Finally, it might be worthwhile suggesting to Clubs or individual Students who are attending overseas events, that they arrange their own Travel Insurance for any such trips as this type of insurance would provide additional covers not included under a PA Policy, such as Repatriation, Medical Expenses & Baggage etc”
NAKMAS will consider the events that members attend in order for NAKMAS to recognise the event in question. Please seek guidance prior to attending the event in question via NAKMAS before departure overseas.
NAKMAS TARIFF 2009/10
The new Tariff for the 2009/10 period has today been uploaded to this website and our apologies for the delay.
NAKMAS REGISTERED TRADE MARK
Following legal action against a domain parking company (nakmas.co.uk) recently, NAKMAS applied to the Intellectual Property Office (formally known as the Patents and Trade Marks Office) for the title ‘NAKMAS’ to become a Registered Trade Mark.
We are pleased that NAKMAS became a Registered Trade Mark as from the 01 May 2009.
In November 2005, NAKMAS registered NAKMAS as a limited company via Companies House (NAKMAS Ltd (Dormant), company number: 05633490) in order to protect the NAKMAS brand.
APPOINTMENT OF WELFARE OFFICERS
Following the last meeting of the NAKMAS National Management Committee, it has been decided that NAKMAS will not accept the Chief Instructor as also being the NAKMAS approved Welfare Officer.
The change is immediately operative for new NAKMAS member affiliates but for existing members, the change will take effect from their re-affiliation date to NAKMAS.
The policy change is as a direct result of numerous child protection cases, mainly sexual, aimed at the Chief Instructor. All cases that have followed a criminal conviction or caution for child sexual offences has proved that the Chief Instructor is also the Welfare Officer.
Full details in the next NAKMAS Stay Safe magazine due out soon.
RESTRICTED SITE
The NAKMAS National Management Committee has authorised a revamp of the Members Area of the website following the development of the new NAKMAS HTML website currently being designed.
Another website will be launched for the purpose of all designated NAKMAS Welfare Officers. This will allow sensitive information be accessed by the NAKMAS approved club/group/association Welfare Officer with information on this new website being strictly about welfare issues and legal issues arising that may affect all NAKMAS approved Welfare Officers.
The new site is currently being worked on and a password and username will be given to all Welfare Officers.
For the avoidance of doubt, all Chief Instructors will have access to the new welfare website.
NAKMAS MAIN WEBSITE
NAKMAS have now formally contracted a professional website and marketing firm to design and create a new website, with a new corporate identity with the provision for NAKMAS members to involve themselves with the new website when it becomes live.
The new website will be WC3 compliant and will meet the Equality Standard: A Framework for Sport website accessibility criteria.
This project will be a major new development for NAKMAS and we are exited about this new major project.
It is anticipated that the new website will become live within the next 8 weeks.
NAKMAS SAFE KIDS CAMPAIGN
The Campaign has been a great success and NAKMAS would like to include good quality photographs of the Accredited Persons delivering the Campaign to children for inclusion upon the NAKMAS Safe Kids website and within the NAKMAS Welfare News. Please send photographs and NAKMAS club registration code to joe.ellis@nakmas.org.uk
If you are in need of more cards and posters, again e-mail Joe who will arrange to send some more to you.
NAKMAS WINS LEGAL CHALLENGE
Due to administrative error on the part of our domain provider, NAKMAS failed to renew the web domain nakmas.co.uk and a parking company brought it and offered to resell it to anyone for £3,000 and made threats that it will point this domain to a sex website as they can do what they like it.
NAKMAS issued a legal challenge to the company due to Trade Mark infringements and the damage to NAKMAS’ reputation. NAKMAS gave the company seven days to resolve the issue. On the seventh day, just before NAKMAS issued a High Court writ, the proprietor of the domain company intervened and transferred nakmas.co.uk back to NAKMAS for free. It is now active again and now points to its rightful site – NAKMAS!
Trade Mark infringement is a serious matter and the NAKMAS National Management Committee was prepared to go the High Court to resolve the issue on behalf of our members, children in partilcular.
